A proposal to transform Sault Ste. Marie’s Gateway site into a Bawating Urban Indigenous Hub was met with varying levels of interest by city council Monday.
Council approved the Memorandum of Understanding, the first step that will see the development group begin its initial work on a $40-million project.
The proposal, unveiled to media last Thursday, will see the 13-acre Gateway site transformed into a multi-residential and commercial development, complete with green space and cultural space.
The development would also provide space for a Friendship Centre, Indigenous Interpretive Centre and a child-care facility.
