A transitional housing development being led by the Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services and managed by the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre is set to be completed in the new year.
The housing project will support urban Indigenous youth aged 18 to 29 who are homeless or at risk.
It will also help young people with addictions and mental health challenges to become independent.
“We already receive phone calls from people leaving messages wanting to move in and they want to make sure their name is being taken and recorded. So, it’s very urgent in the city here,” Charlene Baglien, executive director of the friendship centre.
The project will have 24 hour support, case management, justice and wellness programs along with providing a safe place for them to call home.
“As they progress through our program they will transition into stage two which will be run by Métis Nation of Ontario,” said Katie Bortolin, director of housing.
The project is scheduled to be completed by January 2026.
