Sault Ste. Marie’s Gateway site could be transformed to a Bawating Urban Indigenous Hub.

City council will need to give its approval and allow staff to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bawating Urban Indigenous Committee to make the site available for the development, subject to finalizing the terms and conditions of an agreement.

That’s the first step before the group begins its initial investment of $40 million dollars into the project, media were told Thursday as the project was unveiled.

The proposal includes a multi-residential and commercial development for the city’s 13-acre waterfront Gateway site, complete with green space and cultural space.

The development would also provide space for a Friendship Centre, Indigenous Interpretive Centre and a childcare facility.
