Ontario needs meaningful action.
Ontario is in a housing crisis. Over 80,000 people are experiencing homelessness, rents continue to rise, and homeownership is out of reach for many. Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected, yet housing solutions remain underfunded and overlooked.
OAHS has four key priorities when it comes to this Provincial election:
- Double the stock of non-market community housing in Ontario, as recommend by Scotiabank’s report.
- Commit to adding 22,000 new subsidized homes for Indigenous people by 2035, that are owned and operated by Indigenous housing providers.
- Prioritize investments in the preservation of all existing rent-geared-to-income Urban Native Housing (UNH) units across the sector.
- Develop an Urban Indigenous Housing Action Plan that brings together multiple ministries, Indigenous housing program administrators, and urban Indigenous service providers to:
- Prioritize sustainable Indigenous-led housing solutions by establishing a multi-ministerial coordination mechanism within the provincial government that can sustain the long-term operation of community housing solutions.
- Set urban Indigenous community housing supply targets in partnership with urban Indigenous partners.
- Address urban Indigenous housing policy matters that increase housing stabilization, safety and supports, and improve housing outcomes.
Housing for all is essential for a strong Ontario. It’s time to make real commitments to housing in Ontario for Indigenous communities and beyond.
